FAQ, Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ We have made an attempt to give you answers to the most frequently asked general questions, if you still have an unanswered question please feel free to email us. Thank you.
What kind of needles do you use?
Our clinic uses only FDA approved, industry standard, single use, sterilized and individually packaged needles. The needles are quite thin, about 0.25mm in diameter, approximately the size of human hair and vary in length depending on area to be needled.
What does acupuncture feel like?
Many disciplines of acupuncture concentrate on the patient obtaining "De Qi" phenomena during needle insertion or subsequently through manipulation. The sensation is variously described as an "ache", an "expanding feeling", or even a "radiating sensation" like a tiny electric tingling. These are all possible sensations and the sensations last for a short time. Not feeling a continuous sensation does not necessarily mean the treatment is not working because the initial triggering sensation sets the body's systems into action producing neural and biochemical reactions to take place during the treatment phase.
What should I wear to my acupuncture treatment session?
Our acupuncture treatments are performed on treatment tables with patients lying on their back or face down. In general, loose comfortable clothing is preferred. The majority of our acupuncture sessions involve placing needles below the elbows and knees.
How long will each session last?
In general, the first session or initial meeting lasts approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on your heath concerns and medical history. Subsequent acupuncture sessions can last anywhere from 45 minutes to one hour.
When can I expect results from my acupuncture treatments?
Generally, as an example for pain conditions, you will begin to feel the results during the first 48 hours after your first treatment. Please remember, the body does not change its unbalanced or disordered pattern instantaneously, nor do we want it to. Slow change is the rule of the body, as it is the most lasting form of change. Also it should also be noted that our therapies include other natural modalities in addition to acupuncture. Therapies such as, herbal formulas, anti-inflammatory supplements, and self care recommendations depend on the patient's compliance with these therapies as to the recovery and healing response.
What should I do after my treatment?
In general the rule is to avoid excesses. Directly after your treatment, it is best to move slowly - rise from the treatment table slowly, when you feel it is time. Acupuncture can release naturally produced opiates and hormones (e.g.endorphins and catecholamines), which can make you feel a little woozy. There is no rush to leave and you are welcome to rest before leaving the treatment room. After leaving the clinic, it is wise to "move gently" throughout the rest of the day. Refrain from heavy exertion and exercise, as well as heavy foods and large meals. Following these rules can enhance the short tem and long term effectiveness of your acupuncture treatment.
Can I stop seeing my regular doctor?
Definitely not. At our clinic acupuncture and other natural therapies are designed to complement and supplement the effects of your regular (allopathic) medical provider. We welcome the opportunity to discuss our treatment therapies and collaborate with your regular doctor's therapeutic regimes.
